What is the gospel? The term gospel basically means “good news.” The gospel is the good news about Jesus Christ. God has provided a way of salvation through the gift of His son, Jesus, to the world. He suffered as a sacrifice for sin, overcame death, and now offers salvation to all who will accept it through faith.
The gospel is good news because it is a gift of God, not something that must be earned by penance, good works, or self-improvement.
Here is the gospel in a "nutshell." All of mankind has sinned against the Creator Almighty God. No one is excluded. We have all broken God’s Law. We have all done things our own way and not His. God is holy. He is righteous and just. Since we are all guilty of sinning against our Maker, we must be punished.
It's not sounding very good so far is it?
However, God is not only holy, righteous, and just, but loving, merciful and gracious. In His great love for us all He sent His Son Jesus to be punished in our place, for our sins. Jesus took our sins upon Himself on the cross. He was punished for you and for me, so that we can go free, be forgiven, have salvation, and spend eternity in heaven.
Jesus not only died for you, but He arose from the dead. He arose from the grave victorious. Through placing your trust in Him, through faith in Him, He can give you a resurrection too. Not only does He offer us eternal life with Him in heaven, but He offers us a new life, a better life here and now. This new and more abundant life is called being born-again. That’s the good news! That’s the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The question you must answer is “Will you believe?” Will you turn from your sins and trust in Jesus?
